Aptivate used to keep track of decisions in the form of policies in various shared repositories and wikis. It wasn't easy to keep track of the discussions and concerns people had when arriving at those decisions outside of management meeting. Econsensus was created to fill a need for keeping everyone in the loop and not just in email threads that could easily be lost.

eConsensus was initially made for internal use but from the outset have aimed to be able to make a tool that would be of use to any other organisation too. The site has been build by staff and volunteers at Aptivate and a small team of project contributors who post code to Github. Initial decisions about featured derived from a point of people trusting each other, so many of the features such as user editing privileges and automatic decision making were not developed. eConsensus went live in 2012 and since then several volunteers have been helping us make improvements. It's still an evolving service and we have lots of ideas for great new features.
